A hybrid development loan designed to help working Solomon Islanders invest in productive activities, develop traditionally owned land, create additional income and improve living conditions in rural areas — with repayments secured through current salary income.
The Livelihood and Investment Facility, or LAIF, is a hybrid development loan that is not fully developmental in the normal sense. Normal developmental loans are expected to generate enough income to meet operating costs, meet loan repayments and make a profit from loan proceeds.
LAIF funds developmental and livelihood loans, while repayments are made from the borrower’s salary. Borrowers may use the proceeds to pay down their debts quickly and are encouraged to repay as quickly as possible, particularly where further capital may be needed for expansion or a new venture.
LAIF provides the ability to acquire funds to develop traditionally owned land and venture into activities of interest in productive sectors, using current income to secure loan repayments to the Bank.
LAIF is structured to support farming, fishing, entrepreneurial livelihood and investment activities while using the borrower’s salary as the basis for loan repayment.
